FAQ
Got Questions? We’re Here!
What is RMS Imports?
RMS Imports is a UK-based vehicle sourcing and import specialist. We help customers source, purchase, import and register high-quality Japanese and European vehicles from trusted auctions and dealerships, providing a transparent and fully managed service from start to finish.
Why should I import a vehicle from Japan?
Japanese vehicles are renowned for their excellent condition, lower mileage and meticulous maintenance. Importing directly from Japan also provides access to a wider range of specifications, rare models and exceptional value that are often unavailable in the UK market.
Can I import any vehicle?
In most cases, yes. We can source a wide variety of Japanese and European vehicles, subject to UK import regulations and availability. If you’re unsure whether a particular model can be imported, simply contact our team and we’ll be happy to advise.
How does the vehicle sourcing process work?
Our process is simple:
- Submit your vehicle enquiry.
- Discuss your requirements with our team.
- We source suitable vehicles from Japan.
- We provide photographs, auction sheets and cost estimates.
- You approve the vehicle.
- We purchase and arrange shipping.
- The vehicle is imported and prepared for UK registration.
- You collect or receive delivery of your vehicle.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes. A deposit is required before we begin bidding or purchasing a vehicle on your behalf. This allows us to secure the vehicle and commence the import process.
Is my deposit refundable?
Deposits may be refundable if we are unable to source a suitable vehicle that meets your agreed requirements. Once a vehicle has been approved and successfully purchased, deposits are non-refundable.
Please refer to our Deposit & Refund Policy for further information.
Can I change my mind after purchasing a vehicle?
Once you have approved a vehicle and it has been successfully purchased, the order becomes legally binding. Due to the nature of international vehicle sourcing and importing, cancellations cannot usually be accepted after purchase.
Are there any hidden costs?
No. We pride ourselves on complete transparency. All quotations will clearly outline the costs involved, including:
- Vehicle purchase price.
- Auction fees.
- Shipping costs.
- Import duties and VAT.
- UK registration fees.
- Preparation costs.
- RMS Imports service fees.
We will always explain any applicable charges before proceeding.
How much does it cost to import a vehicle?
The total cost varies depending on the vehicle, exchange rates, shipping costs and UK taxes. Once we understand your requirements, we will provide a detailed quotation before any commitments are made.
Are Japanese imported vehicles reliable?
Japanese vehicles are widely regarded as some of the most reliable in the world. Many imported vehicles are exceptionally well maintained and often have lower mileage than comparable UK examples.
However, imported vehicles are still used vehicles unless otherwise stated and may show signs of age-related wear and tear.
What is an auction grade?
Japanese auction houses use a grading system to indicate a vehicle’s overall condition. We review auction sheets carefully and explain the grading system to our customers before any purchase is made.
We will always provide honest advice regarding a vehicle’s condition and suitability.
Can I inspect the vehicle before buying?
As vehicles are located in Japan, physical inspections by UK customers are generally not possible. We provide detailed photographs, auction reports and vehicle information to help you make an informed decision.
How long does the import process take?
Import times will vary depending on shipping schedules and UK processing times. As a guide, most imports take between 8 and 16 weeks from purchase to delivery.
Can shipping delays happen?
Yes. International shipping is subject to factors outside our control, including:
- Shipping schedules.
- Customs inspections.
- Port congestion.
- Weather conditions.
- DVLA processing times.
We will keep you updated throughout the process and provide estimated timelines wherever possible.
Will my vehicle be road legal in the UK?
Yes. Where required, we will arrange the necessary processes to ensure your vehicle complies with UK regulations before registration.
This may include:
- IVA testing.
- MOT testing.
- Vehicle modifications.
- DVLA registration.
Will the vehicle come with UK number plates?
Yes. Once the vehicle has been successfully registered with the DVLA, UK number plates can be fitted before collection or delivery.
